INFORMATION RESOURCES: Federal Data & Resources

A number of agencies, program offices, and laboratories within the U.S. Department of Energy are resources for state-level data and information on solar and renewable energy.

U.S. ENERGY INFORMATION ADMINISTRATION (EIA)

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) is the statistical and analytical agency within the U.S. Department of Energy, responsible for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating independent and impartial energy information. EIA provides a wide range of information and data products covering energy production, energy sources, stocks, demand, imports, exports, and prices; and prepares analyses, forecasts, and special reports on topics of current interest. Several of EIA’s products and tools provide solar data and information for the State of California.

Electric Power Monthly
This monthly report provides monthly statistics at the state, regional, and U.S. levels for generation, capacity, and other electric power industry indicators. Tables show monthly and annual data on solar and renewables generation. *Note Tables 1.1.A (total U.S. generation from renewable sources by resource type), 1.17.A (utility-scale and distributed PV generation by state & sector), 1.18.A. (solar thermal generation by state & sector), and 6.2.B (utility-scale solar thermal and PV capacity, distributed PV capacity, and total solar PV capacity, by state).

State Energy Portal
EIA’s interactive web portal for state energy information, including data, analysis, and detailed State Energy Profiles (updated monthly). The California energy profile provides an overview of California’s energy picture and highlights key data series; use the portal’s “Find” tool to access and search EIA’s entire collection of state-level data for California.

State Energy Data System (SEDS)
SEDS provides annual time-series estimates of state-level energy consumption, prices, expenditures, and production by energy source. The full set of tables and data files are updated annually though reports lag about 2 years.

Monthly Energy Review (MER)
EIA’s primary report of recent and historical energy statistics. Included are total energy production, consumption, and trade; energy prices; natural gas, coal, electricity, and renewable energy; carbon dioxide emissions; and data unit conversions. Production and consumption data is U.S.-level and by sector.

OFFICE OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY & RENEWABLE ENERGY (EERE)

The Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) accelerates development and facilitates deployment of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies and market-based solutions that strengthen U.S. energy security, environmental quality, and economic vitality. Specific information on solar developments are provided through EERE’s Solar Energy Technologies Office.

Solar Energy Resource Center
The Solar Energy Resource Center contains work developed by the Department of Energy, national laboratories and SunShot awardees. The Solar Energy Resource Center has over 100 unique documents which provide information on model standards and codes, utility policies, solar facilities, financing, incentives, market analysis, solar basics manufacturing, workforce development, shared solar, planning, zoning, permitting, and interconnection.

Solar Decathalon
The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathalon challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.
